2008 Student Papers Contest

The 2008 Student Papers Contest will be held.

Your paper should be postmarked no later than Tuesday, June 10, 2008, for consideration for one of seven $1,000 awards!

Write about any of these transportation categories:

• Mobility: Issues in transportation systems or operations, including traffic engineering, transit management and surveillance and control
  
• Safety: Issues including driver behavior (e.g., distraction), crash causation, vehicle performance and infrastructure improvements (e.g., road design, intersection improvements) that will contribute to a reduction in crashes or fatalities
  
• Applied technology: Technologies in the areas of engineering sciences, material sciences, information systems and construction and management applied to transportation facilities or services.
  
• Structures and materials:  Issues concerning increasing the durability and service life of highway and bridge materials and designs
  
• Policy: Federal, state or local laws, regulations, or institutional or procedural arrangements that affect the planning, programming, design, construction or operation of transportation facilities or services
  
• Freight or passenger rail: Capacity, regulation, technology, safety or strategic program policy
  
• Intermodal: Issues in connectivity or access to modal facilities such as airports and ports, trucks on rail, regulation or operation of intermodal facilities.

Topics must be approved in advance. Send proposed paper title and a one-paragraph description of the nature of the paper to rpethel@vt.edu.
